Greetings – Folk music is an impossible-to-define style of music. In the corporate music world, if it’s a singer-songwriter playing an acoustic guitar, it’s folk music. Among scholars, folk comprises songs of unknown source handed down from generation to generation. And then there are those who point to folk’s long tradition of bringing people together to make a better world. Here at Caffe Lena, we happily embrace all of the above.

If you’re in the community-building folk camp, you’ll like this week’s schedule. Open Mic is a great place to share your creative work. Jams are places to play together. Sometimes we set aside music and examine a challenge facing our community. That brings us to Rex Smith, former publisher of the Albany Times Union, who will be educating us about the sorry state of local media. There’s the timeless music of Rakish to refresh our spirits. There’s a new songwriting club meeting. There’s a (sold out!) fundraiser for an organization that supports farmers and feeds hungry folks in Washington County. There’s a rousing gospel show paired with a shared meal. All of these events reflect what we believe is a core value in a folk music community like ours: whether you sit in the seats or on the stage, you’re first and foremost a friend and a neighbor.

See you at the show,
Sarah

This month’s album is Roger Water’s lyrical diatribe about the music business, Wish You Were Here. With stories, slides, quizes and deep listening, Rochmon will sharpen your understanding of all that went into the making of this classic album.

Now, in a state with a budget bigger than 90 percent of the world’s countries, 17 counties are down to just 1 newspaper, making it more difficult for the public to hold elected officials accountable, or agree on shared sets of information.

Join NY Focus, a non-profit news organization, for an urgent discussion on the future of local news at “Journalism in Challenging Times.” The event, featuring a presentation by veteran New York journalist Rex Smith (followed by a Q&A), supports the groundbreaking reporting of New York Focus, the nonprofit newsroom that is dedicated to uncovering how NYS really works.

Sabat, bassist for Mile Twelve, creates intricate, grooving arrangements rooted in American folk, showcasing the bass’s full potential. Rakish, featuring Maura Shawn Scanlin (a U.S. Scottish Fiddle Champion) and Conor Hearn, blends jaunty Irish tradition with the sophistication of chamber music.
